Fidya or Kaffarah

Compensation for not fasting £5

Fidya / Kaffarah

If you have missed any days of fasting during the month of Ramadan then a form of compensation is recommended. This compensation (known as a fidya or kaffarah) involves providing one person with two meals (or alternatively two persons with one meal).

The custom amount payable for days missed (or broken) out of necessity (i.e. sickness) is one fidya for each day missed. For any days of fasting missed (or broken) which were done unnecessarily the custom compensation (kaffarah) recommended is feeding 60 poor people for each day missed. There are also other non-financial forms of compensation available and we recommend seeking advice from your local teacher if you have any questions or concerns.
